About Them

Can you please fully explain your business or product line?

Zorai Redesign is a local, black-owned small business that specializes in curating high-quality vintage furniture and refinishing them for the modern home. I redesign painted and natural wood pieces to fit in any space. I source furniture from far & near and also accept client-owned pieces that need to be given a new life.

With the Winnipeg local maker community continuing to grow, what is the most important thing you’d like potential customers of your company to know?

There is a lot of misconception when it comes to buying refinished/second-hand furniture. Most people prefer to buy brand new from big box stores, However, brand new furniture is most likely made of particle board or MDF, which can never withstand the test of time like solid wood vintage furniture could. I have refinished pieces dating back to the 1940s and the construction/craftsmanship is outstanding. Our furniture can be customized to suit the exact taste, colour schemes, finishes, and design a client wants, making it one of a kind.

Millions of pieces of furniture end up in landfills each year. That’s why my goal is to reduce that waste by meticulously sourcing and refinishing your furniture to be lasting and cherished in your homes.

What inspired you to start your business?

I got tired of sitting in front of a computer eight hours a day and needed to do something different with my hands. I have always been interested in anything related to interior design, home decorations, and DIYs. There is this passion and joy I get from being creative and, just like most people, the pandemic created a big shift in my life. I needed an outlet to allow my creative juices to flow.

Do you have any advice that you would pass on to someone hoping to start up their own business or product line?

I think the winter months are a bit challenging for me. I work out of my uninsulated garage, which can be difficult as I am always working with paint and stains, so drying time can be longer. Some days I can’t even work because I’m waiting for a warmer day, which sort of prolongs my projects. Even with a nice portable heater, the -30 weather we get here can be a pain. Hopefully, by God’s grace, I can expand to a bigger and better workshop soon!

What has been your biggest success as a maker?

I have been fortunate enough to have a good list of things I consider success in terms of my business. I will start by saying how thankful I am for the amazing and loyal clients I have gained. They keep me honest and are the reason why I am able to keep doing what I do.

Secondly, the opportunity to cross paths with so many amazing makers/refinishers in this community and beyond, who are all so supportive and are my biggest cheerleaders. The constant knowledge I have been able to acquire throughout all of this is mind-blowing to me, being able to use tools I never thought I would touch and, more importantly, having such a wonderful partner that helps me with my business and supports me any time of the day. He doesn’t only lift the heavy stuff! He has taught me how to use so many of the power tools I use today and more.

Do you have any advice that you would pass on to someone hoping to start up their own business or product line?

Start with an open mind, invest in building your knowledge, and take your time but be steady. There are going to be days you don’t feel up to it and that’s okay because tomorrow is another day. Stay disciplined and consistent but most importantly, strive to provide quality service to your customers.

Please share any upcoming events as well as the best place(s) for people to purchase your product!

Every week, I release a piece or two that is available for purchase either through Facebook Marketplace or my Instagram. My DMs are always open for potential clients/customers to book customizable pieces either from my own inventory or their own personal piece of furniture. Our Facebook page is also a great place to send us a message for inquiries and stay up to date with new releases.
