About Them

Can you please fully explain your business or product line?

Grey Haven Bath & Body specializes in a range of handmade bath and body products. Our products are all made in-home and ALL ingredients, packaging, and labels are exclusively sourced from Canadian suppliers!

We believe that skincare can be affordable, responsible, and effective for everyone, while also being fun. As such, all of our products (including the fragrances that we use) are paraben, sulfate, and phthalate free. We also use Kraft brown labels made from recycled materials and Bioglitter rather than traditional glitters in our products.

Our current product lineup includes bath bombs, shower steamers, candles, natural deodorant, lip balm, and other skin pampering products. Our bestseller has continued to be our amazing body butter, as it is non-greasy, fast absorbing, and suitable for skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and other sensitivities.

With the Winnipeg local maker community continuing to grow, what is the most important thing you’d like potential customers of your company to know?

One of the things I love most about engaging with customers is the ability to talk about what goes into our products for both the ingredients and process. Too often, consumers have intentionally been kept in the dark or misled by big industry in regards to the products they purchase. As I always tell my students, the way to create lasting change in this world for healthy, responsible, economically, socially, and environmentally sustainable goods, is through conversation and learning. As such, I encourage my current and potential customers to take some time to talk with any and all makers that they interact with about their products! We love to share what we know with you and expand our own understanding & connections in the business from your input, questions, and knowledge.

What inspired you to start your business?

Prior to founding our business, myself and my partner had made a habit for years to make items such as candles and bath bombs for friends and family as gifts. However, the key “flashpoint” for launching our business, as I’m sure is the same for many other newer businesses, was job insecurity created by the pandemic.

Permanent teacher positions were in short supply in this province (even pre-pandemic) and unfortunately, permanent positions have continued to be slashed in all divisions each year, in order to cope with managing finances and inadequate access to funding. Despite term positions at times lasting years, the uncertainty of potential future lockdowns without a confirmed position for the following school year was enough to get the ball rolling on cultivating another potential income stream. And so I donned my mad scientist hat, while my partner organized ALL of the startup supply chain sourcing, website, finance organization, and craft room construction…off we went!

What was the biggest struggle you’ve had to overcome?

As we are a relatively new business, I would say the biggest struggle we have faced so far is navigating changing supply chains, costs, and selling products, while the whole world is being hit by a recession, among other ongoing global issues.

What has been your biggest success as a maker?

Our biggest success has been the opportunity to interact with so many other makers in this province and really be welcomed into the maker community! The amount we have learned and grown in the past year from engaging with customers and makers is truly astounding.

Do you have any advice that you would pass on to someone hoping to start up their own business or product line?

For someone looking to start up a new business (especially right now), the biggest suggestion I could make is to secure a sizable amount of disposable income upfront. Even at a small scale, start-up costs are sizable! Secondly, don’t undervalue your time! It’s easy to get caught in the “race to the bottom” for product pricing, however, YOU are valuable, as is your time. The quality of your products will speak for itself and dedicated customers can see the value in your product with fair pricing that honours both your input cost and labour.

Please share any upcoming events as well as the best place(s) for people to purchase your product!

From our website! We offer free local delivery for orders over $40 in Winnipeg & surrounding area, as well as shipping for further distances! Also, keep an eye on our social media for the markets that you can find us at.
