About Them

Can you please fully explain your business or product line?

I make hand-painted wood signs. If you have a vision, we will work together to make it come to life!

With the Winnipeg local maker community continuing to grow, what is the most important thing you’d like potential customers of your company to know?

One of the most important things that I want my customers to know is that when I created my small business, I wanted my signs to be affordable. It was and still is a very important part of my business, which I am proud of.

Secondly, I want my customers to know that I customize! If you have an idea of what you want, I will work with you to create it. You approve everything and are involved at every step.

The last part is that I also have a range of pre-made signs. If you are looking for a last-minute gift, I will send you pictures of what I have in stock.

What inspired you to start your business?

A few years back, I redecorated my home and wanted it to have a rustic/farmhouse feel. I noticed these beautiful pictures of handmade signs on Pinterest and thought, “hey, I can make that!” Before I knew it, I was making signs for other people. The funny thing about all of this is that I didn’t make my first sign for my own home until a year and a half later.

What was the biggest struggle you’ve had to overcome?

My struggle throughout this entire process (and still is) is the social media aspect of it. How to get followers, take beautiful pictures, etc. It is no easy task but I keep on going because I want to continue creating; it is what I love to do, my passion. My newest struggle is Instagram Reels, which is a beast of its own. I watch them all of the time and wonder, “how the heck did they do that?”. I still have so much to learn.

What has been your biggest success as a maker?

One thing I am proud of is when I made my first Instagram Reel. I watched all of the tutorials that I could and when I made my first Reel, I literally jumped for joy. I couldn’t believe that I did it!

Do you have any advice that you would pass on to someone hoping to start up their own business or product line?

The answer is simple – just do it.

Before I did anything, I researched what supplies I would need, how to make the product, etc. I read a ton and took a ton of notes. Once I was comfortable and confident, I went out and got the wood & stain. The best part was that I already had all of the tools!

Please share any upcoming events as well as the best place(s) for people to purchase your product!

The best place to find Signs by Melissa Jean is through Instagram. I also try to attend several craft sales throughout the year and will post them as they approach.
