Can you please fully explain your business or product line?

Terrarium Winnipeg produces terrariums of various shapes and sizes, featuring selected tropical plants. We create mini-ecosystems encased in glass that can serve as a miniature garden or forest and be displayed in any space that you want to brighten up. We want to bring nature closer to your home.

With the Winnipeg local maker community continuing to grow, what is the most important thing you’d like potential customers of your company to know?

Our terrariums are designed to be self-sustaining, requiring minimal maintenance. We want everyone to be able to experience the joy of having plants all year round, especially for those who believe that taking care of plants takes a lot of time and effort. Our terrariums have plants that can survive with indirect sunlight and with a few sprays of water every few days or weeks. 

What inspired you to start your business?

Winnipeg Terrarium started out as a hobby during the early stages of the pandemic, as we wanted to fill the time and shift our minds through art & plants. 

We started with thorough research by reading books and articles about terrariums & plants. As our understanding and interests grew, we gradually started to put what we read and saw into practice, experimenting with the types of glass and plants that were available. 

After creating a few pieces, we started to share our work and sell terrariums on Instagram which, to our surprise, started to gain attention and traction. More people started to inquire about the products shown and we were able to build a business with all of the support from our community.

What was the biggest struggle you’ve had to overcome?

One of the biggest struggles that we experienced and are still currently experiencing as beginner business owners is the supply shortages. Due to the pandemic, it was hard to find and get supplies such as glass encasements, rocks/pebbles, and plants with the current inflation going on in the market.

What has been your biggest success as a maker?

To us, every item sold is a success. The ability to bring joy through our terrariums and being able to see someone happy is a success. 

It is a vital reason for us to continue the work that we are doing. Seeing how people fall in love with our products makes all the time, energy, and work worth it.

Do you have any advice that you would pass on to someone hoping to start up their own business or product line?

Trust your product and just put your work out there. You will never know whether it will work out if you don’t try.
