About Them

Can you please fully explain your business or product line?

We offer a variety of accessories, the main one being our hand-made polymer clay earrings. Polymer clay earrings are extremely lightweight with nickel-free hypoallergenic components, making them extremely comfortable to wear. You’ll forget you’re even wearing them, while still looking your best. Each style I’ve made has a story behind it. The very first style that I created was named after my best friend of 15 years and, to this day, is still my best seller! Each style has its own individual story and meaning behind the name.

With the Winnipeg local maker community continuing to grow, what is the most important thing you’d like potential customers of your company to know?

I put my entire heart and soul into every single piece I create and I’m always striving to make my products better than before. The thing I love about working with polymer clay is there is always room to grow and learn, whether it be a new technique, style, etc. I can learn new things while still exercising the creativeness my soul craves.

What inspired you to start your business?

I started SageClayCo in 2020 when I found my first small business as a virtual assistant/self-taught graphic designer wasn’t fulfilling my desire to create anymore. I longed to create with my own two hands. I tried out lots of different avenues, such as vinyl-cut products and even tried my hand at knitting, but they didn’t stick. I found polymer clay when scrolling Pinterest one day and let’s just say…the rest is history!

What was the biggest struggle you’ve had to overcome?

I would say my biggest struggle is balancing my small business with my full-time job. When I first started, I didn’t realize how much work went into the “small business owner” role. You quickly learn all the behind-the-scenes action that goes behind the pretty website and curated Instagram feed. People don’t get to see the late nights, bookkeeping, website updating, content planning, supply ordering, inventory tracking, and the countless other things that go into keeping a small business alive.

The tasks involved as a small business owner can be daunting, but the passion I have keeps me going. My little 600 square foot apartment is basically just a live-in-studio/warehouse. Honestly, all the behind-the-scenes work makes me so proud of what I’ve created through SageClayCo. It lights a fire inside of me and even though it can be a struggle at times, I wouldn’t change any of it!

What has been your biggest success as a maker?

I still have a lot to learn, but my biggest success thus far has been branching off and offering wholesale. If you would have told me in 2020 that my earrings would be in stores across Canada and the United States, I would have laughed! It makes me so incredibly proud and grateful that my products are in the hands of people from all over the country.

Do you have any advice that you would pass on to someone hoping to start up their own business or product line?

My biggest piece of advice – GO FOR IT! There’s plenty of room for all of us. It was very intimidating starting my business. There is always going to be someone with more followers, with products you think might be “better” than yours. Don’t let the “what-if” thoughts hold you back, you never know where it could take you down the road! It has shaped me as a person, and I’m so glad I never let those thoughts hold me back!

Please share any upcoming events as well as the best place(s) for people the purchase your product!

You can find my products through my website. I also post daily on Instagram and would love to connect! You can also carry my products in your own store by shopping through my wholesale link. I hope to join more local pop-up markets this year, and will keep my followers updated on Instagram with upcoming dates!
