Can you please fully explain your business or product line?
What is Finishing Butter? Your Flavour Gamechanger! Are you ready to immerse yourself in a completely new type of flavour enhancer? Prepare your dish and top with your butter of choice…that’s it!
Von Slick’s offers numerous types of finishing butter that have the ability to put your dishes over the top for your family and friends. From sweet to savoury, there is a flavour for every occasion.
With the Winnipeg local maker community continuing to grow, what is the most important thing you’d like potential customers of your company to know?
We use locally sourced Manitoban butter from Notre Dame Creamery and our products are sold in an eco-friendly paper tube that can be composted.
Our production facility is located in a community called Middlebro (a population of about 50 people). We have a great small-town team that produces Von Slick’s with the love and care you’d expect from a tight-knit group from a small village.
What inspired you to start your business?
Rob Sengotta and Landon Kroeker met working at Buffalo Point Resort four years ago. Rob, the head chef, and Landon, who manages the marketing for the resort, became close friends and decided their skill sets complimented each other. The next step was the right idea for a product to get started. Rob’s culinary background had him working with compound butter while he cooked all over the world.
What was the biggest struggle you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a business during COVID has many challenges; procuring packaging and dealing with the constraints of the current global supply chain has been a big test.
Also, the mask mandate has made it very difficult to host tasting events where prospective customers could try the product which would most often entice them to make a purchase.
What has been your biggest success as a maker?
We are currently in almost 80 stores that span the province. From Gillam to Brandon to Sprague, there’s a retailer to try how good Von Slick’s is!
Do you have any advice that you would pass on to someone hoping to start up their own business or product line?
Patience. We have seen very quick success but also major setbacks all within the first six months of selling our unique product.
Do your homework on cost and your pricing model because every penny counts!
