Local Band Paper Machetes Drops New EP
Local band Paper Machetes, fronted by The WPG’s own Christy Taronno, dropped a brand new album yesterday, December 2nd, and celebrated with a show at the Good Will Social Club on Portage Avenue.
The EP, titled Balancing Act, is a five-track project that channels your inner melancholy. Personally, I find that the album has an earthy “Billie Eilish meets Sufjan Stevens meets Lana Del Rey” feel to it, taking all the best parts of those influences and melding them masterfully.
The title track, “Balancing Act”, was released as a single back on October 21st of this year, and it might be my favourite track on the album, that is until the next one starts.
All the songs are so well constructed and feature meaningful lyrics that get you thinking. Each individual note is thought through and well produced. In the last track, “Ugly Duckling”, for instance, the vocal effects are so perfectly used to create a particular feeling of dissonance while still pushing the beautiful melody.
If you’re looking for examples of amazing local music right here in Winnipeg, look no further than Paper Machetes and their new album, Balancing Act.
