About Them

Can you please fully explain your business or product line?

Sarah Makes Bracelets designs and creates simple & elegant gemstone, wood, and metal bead bracelets. It’s an accessory that works for the everyday jeans and hoodie look as well as for formal outings like weddings & grad.

When I have the opportunity to participate in local markets, I bring my workshop with me, providing the opportunity for on-site, bespoke, bracelet creation. This service is my most popular option as customers are able to walk away with a bracelet that gives them a perfect fit. While I sometimes have assistance in the stringing of bracelets, each and every bracelet is tied and finished by me.

With the Winnipeg local maker community continuing to grow, what is the most important thing you’d like potential customers of your company to know?

I love to make unique and custom bracelets, especially for those who have trouble finding bracelets that fit! If there is ever an issue with a bracelet purchase, whether in fit or something else, I am happy to restring and resize to ensure that every customer is happy with their purchase (or gift)! I strive to ensure quality customer service at all times!

I have a skin condition known as vitiligo and use my business to raise awareness & money for vitiligo research. 15% of sales from sandalwood and rose quartz sets as well as rosewood sets is donated towards vitiligo research.

What inspired you to start your business?

In the summer of 2017, I was standing in a craft store with an armload of beads (intending to just make bracelets for myself) and I commented to a friend, “I should start a business and I could call it Sarah Makes Bracelets You Should Buy Them” and the idea was planted! In November 2017, Sarah Makes Bracelets officially launched. I’m a high school teacher, so it’s always a balance to manage this business in the midst of everything else, but it’s been a four-year journey and I am excited to see where the future takes me.

What was the biggest struggle you’ve had to overcome?

I struggle with maintaining the balance of energy that I put in marketing myself and my business with the demands of my day job and everyday life. My very supportive husband, Ken, always reminds me that this is not my full-time job and there is only so much that I can, and should, do.

I am not a natural salesperson and growing my business has been a struggle for me. It is completely out of my comfort zone to talk to potential customers at markets, but I feel like I’ve made a lot of progress in this over the years!

What has been your biggest success as a maker?

I have LOVED being able to use my business to raise awareness about vitiligo and I have loved making connections with others who are learning to live with it. Sarah Makes Bracelets has opened the doors to talk about what vitiligo is and how I’ve embraced & can celebrate life with vitiligo.

Do you have any advice that you would pass on to someone hoping to start up their own business or product line?

Talk to people who are doing this, ask questions, research when you can, and don’t be afraid of failure when things don’t go exactly as planned.

Please share any upcoming events as well as the best place(s) for people the purchase your product!

I’m not scheduled for any upcoming events as I’m focusing on navigating another unusual school year, but I’m hopeful that I will be able to take part in a few winter markets! In the meantime, visit my website to make your purchases!
