About Them

Can you please fully explain your business or product line?

Built Tuft is a one-man team that creates custom hand-tufted rugs with nothing, but a rug gun and some yarn. Built Tuft currently does made-to-order rugs and designs in a wide variety of styles from anime, business logos, pet images, etc.

With the Winnipeg local maker community continuing to grow, what is the most important thing you’d like potential customers of your company to know?

The amount of love and care that I put into these rugs is second-to-none. I’m one of the most nit-picky people in the world, so if I notice a little discrepancy in the design for a rug I make or even a piece that is longer than the rest of the rug, I make sure it gets taken care of. I believe in quality above everything else and I can ensure that the customer will always be happy with the final product.

What inspired you to start your business?

I’ve always been an artist at heart. From elementary to high school, I felt like I did great work when I painted or drew. My life took a different path and I ended up using movement and dance as my canvas instead. Fast forward a couple of years, we all get older and our bodies sometimes can’t handle as much as it used to.

While scrolling through TikTok, I saw a video of someone using a gun to make a rug. I thought it was amazing seeing all the possibilities that can be done with it and that’s where the idea came about. My first rug, which was made all by hand using a punch needle, actually came out AMAZING. From there, I knew this was something that I could excel in and be great in.

What was the biggest struggle you’ve had to overcome?

Honestly, just keeping up with my commissions. As a one-man team, I can only go so fast, so as orders pile up, the wait times increase. That said, at the end of the day, I believe the quality of the work that I give to customers makes it all worth it, even if they do have to wait a couple of days longer.

What has been your biggest success as a maker?

Just seeing the reactions people have when they unwrap the package and roll out the rug on their floor. I also love that I can walk into my friend’s homes and see my work on their floor or even hung onto their wall because it’s too nice to step on. That feeling is irreplaceable.

Do you have any advice that you would pass on to someone hoping to start up their own business or product line?

Just like our friend Shia Labeouf said, “Just do it!” Now is the best time to try and do something you love. You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take and that is the most real thing anyone has ever said.

Please share any upcoming events as well as the best place(s) for people to purchase your product!

No physical events are currently planned at the moment, but I will be trying to set up shop at local markets and conventions! For now, follow me on Instagram and say hi!
