About Them

Can you please fully explain your business or product line?

Cupid’s Contemporary is known for specializing in hand-made phone charms; a beaded accessory that turns your phone into part of your outfit. More recently, we have expanded our offerings to include beaded necklaces, bracelets, and anklets! This female-owned business was founded by three best friends who recognized the trend of throwback fashion and used beading as a way to stay together during quarantine.

Each item is hand-made using beads sourced from all over the city, some new, some vintage. With a diverse line of beaded accessories, you’re sure to find something you love from each founder’s unique style.

With the Winnipeg local maker community continuing to grow, what is the most important thing you’d like potential customers of your company to know?

We take pride in every order we receive, no matter how big or small. Our excitement comes from bringing other people’s visions to life and creating products that fit each individual’s unique aesthetic & style. When we receive a custom order, we try to put ourselves in the shoes of our clients so that we may picture and create the product of their dreams. With the majority of our orders being custom orders, we take great excitement in designing the perfect creation.

What inspired you to start your business?

The business was founded in the depths of code red with beading becoming a way for three friends to get together and spend quality time with each other when the world came to a standstill. Born from our love for each other and pretty things, it became a way to stay busy, keep sane, and have fun!

What was the biggest struggle you’ve had to overcome?

The biggest struggle we have had to overcome is finding a way to balance work, school, friends, family, and beading, all at the same time. It can be stressful knowing there are a few orders on the backlog, but we always want to get them done as quickly as possible.

An obstacle has definitely been knowing when to prioritize the business and when to prioritize ourselves.

What has been your biggest success as a maker?

The greatest excitement comes from when we see our clients posting photos with our creations. It is remarkable to think about other people using our products out in the world! It’s the best to see a client who is rocking a phone charm, especially when they are just out and about, living their everyday lives!

Do you have any advice that you would pass on to someone hoping to start up their own business or product line?

DO SOMETHING YOU LOVE! If you don’t love it, you’ll get tired of it. Find something you’re passionate about and you will figure the rest out. The three of us have always had a love for pretty things and jewelry, so beading just makes sense!

Oftentimes, I find myself surfing the web and searching for new beads to buy on a Friday night; it’s not work if it doesn’t feel like work.

Please share any upcoming events as well as the best place(s) for people to purchase your product!

Currently, you can find us on Peg City Thrift! We’ll also be at the Commerce Student’s Association Business Banquet in March 2022!
