About Them
Can you please fully explain your business or product line?
We specialize in homemade barbecue dry rubs that are free from MSG and fillers as well as offering reduced sodium. Some are even gluten free!
With the Winnipeg local maker community continuing to grow, what is the most important thing you’d like potential customers of your company to know?
We are a small home-based local company that loves to barbecue. All of our barbecue rub recipes have been passed down, redone, or tweaked from our family; there are generations of history in our barbecue rub making.
What inspired you to start your business?
While we love to create our own rubs, there were occasions where we needed something quick to work with. However, going to the stores and seeing all the fillers & names we couldn’t pronounce, plus the amount of sodium that was in each one, we decided to start looking back through family recipes and make our own. Winnipeg Pit Master’s was born!
What was the biggest struggle you’ve had to overcome?
Getting noticed I think was the biggest struggle when we first started. Going to retail stores and trying to pitch why our product was better than others was something we had to learn and be confident in. When we started out, we attended craft sales (and still do), but we hope to expand and get our products into more locations around Manitoba
What has been your biggest success as a maker?
Landing our first retail store, Luxe Barbecue Company. This was a huge step for our little homebased company and we were overjoyed to begin our next step in growing the company. You can now find our rubs in a few more retail stores such as Mainly Manitoba (Brandon & Clear Lake) and Hillside Beach Restaurant.
Do you have any advice that you would pass on to someone hoping to start up their own business or product line?
Be creative! If you have a passion for something, try it out and be organized. Do your research, especially if it’s food-related. Don’t be afraid to try something new; you never know where that will take you.
Please share any upcoming events as well as the best place(s) for people to purchase your product!
Between now and June 18th, we have a great Father’s Day special available through our Facebook page!
