Jets vs Maple Leafs Preview (Apr 22 & 24, 2021)

The Winnipeg Jets who have a record of 27-15-3 will be hosting the 28-13-5 Toronto Maple Leafs at Bell MTS Place for a two-game series. The Jets are ranked second in the Scotia North Division while the Maple Leafs hold first place.

In their last 10 games, the Winnipeg Jets are 6-3-1 with an average of 3 goals per game, 5.1 assists, and 9.2 penalty minutes, all the while giving up just 2.1 goals per game with a .926 save percentage.

The Leafs, on the other hand, with a record of 5-3-2 in their last 10 games are also averaging 3 goals, 5.6 assists, 4.1 penalty minutes, and a .892 save percentage, but are allowing a more problematic 3.1 goals per game. They will be looking to avenge their loss from last week while the Jets will be hoping to take advantage of the lacklustre defensive effort from the Leafs as of late.

Auston Matthews and his 55 points will lead a Toronto Maple Leafs roster in tonight’s game versus Winnipeg. Matthews is leading the entire NHL with 33 goals. Mitch Marner is leading the Toronto Maple Leafs with 41 assists and, like his teammate Matthews, also has a total of 55 points. Team Captain John Tavares is performing as well with 14 points in his past ten games.

Thursday, April 15th, the Jets rolled into Scotiabank Arena and decimated the Maple Leafs 5-2, with Kyle Connor earning 2 goals for the Winnipeg Jets.

Speaking of fan-favourite Connor, he is averaging .96 points per game. As Connor continues to expose his level of ‘expensiveness,’ he sits just behind Nikolaj Ehlers with 43 points, including a team-best 21 goals.

Halifax Moosehead alumni Ehlers has managed to earn 12 points in his past 10 games, with a team-leading 45 points on the year.

Winnipeg Jets Captain Blake Wheeler will likely be playing tonight after the longest absence in his Winnipeg career following an ‘undisclosed’ injury, suspected (but not confirmed) to have been a concussion.

Jordie Benn will make his Jets debut tonight. As Jets fans on reddit and twitter had feared, it’s Logan Stanley that’s going to be making way for the newly acquired defensemen. Benn will most likely be paired with Dylan DeMelo tonight.

As for the Leaf’s injury woes, Zach Hyman’s knee injury will have him in the press box eating popcorn, Ilya Mikheyev is listed day-to-day with an undisclosed injury, and D-man Zach Bogosian will also be out of the lineup.

Nick Foligno, who until yesterday had been listed day-to-day with an upper-body injury, may actually suit up. This will mark his debut with the Leafs since the trade deadline deal.
