About Them
Can you please fully explain your business or product line?
Sweetheart Scrunchies creates handmade hair scrunchies made from a variety of designs and fabrics. They come in both regular and mini sizes.
With the Winnipeg local maker community continuing to grow, what is the most important thing you’d like potential customers of your company to know?
What sets us apart from other Manitoba scrunchie makers is our ability to source high-quality fabrics from local stores, while still maintaining an affordable price point for all budgets. With over 40 different fabrics and designs, we have something to suit all styles. We also donate a portion from all market sales to our local Humane Society.
What inspired you to start your business?
Our 11-year-old daughter is obsessed with all things 90s and this led us to invest in a sewing machine to start making hair scrunchies. As teachers, both my husband and I have summers off and are always looking for creative ways to keep busy! It started as a hobby making them for family and friends, but before long our Instagram account took off and we began attending some local markets. It’s something our whole family takes part in and we love getting to meet other talented Manitoba makers!
What was the biggest struggle you’ve had to overcome?
For us, the biggest struggle would have to be trying to balance our work life throughout the school year and still keeping up with our scrunchie business.
What has been your biggest success as a maker?
The most surprising success for us was seeing how fast we accumulated a social media following and many repeat customers. We’ve also been blown away by some of the celebrities and athletes across Canada who have given us their support, including Kortney Wilson (HGTV), Hayley Wickenheiser (Pro Hockey Player), Caroline Szwed (Sportsnet Host), Kerri Einarson (Curler), and Heather McLean (Olympic Speed Skater), and Sara Orlesky (TSN). We’ve been very humbled by all the support.
Do you have any advice that you would pass on to someone hoping to start up their own business or product line?
It takes perseverance and hard work. But if you love what you’re doing, it makes things so much more enjoyable and rewarding.
Please share any upcoming events (virtual for the time being, of course) as well as the best place(s) for people to purchase your product!
We will be participating in some upcoming markets in the city and southern Manitoba as soon as it’s safe to do so. In the meantime, our Instagram account is a great spot to check out! We’re frequently adding new stock and running sales/contests.
