Can you please fully explain your business or product line?
Wolseley Kombucha is Manitoba’s first local kombucha company, est 2016. WK brews organic, raw undiluted kombucha at their 749 Wall Street location. They have over 55 retailers in Winnipeg and just expanded outside Winnipeg to Morden and Winkler.
With the local maker community continuing to grow, what makes you stand out from the rest?
Kombucha is a unique product on its own, but WK stands out with over 30 flavours on rotation at their taproom and at events. They have 10 signature flavours that range from your classic Lemon Ginger to fruity Pomegranate Limeade to Root Beer to Jasmine. They always have new flavours on tap and use local picked berries, apples or pears for fun seasonal flavours like Apple Spice or Saskatoon.
What made you realize that you had a product that could be shared with others?
WK started in Michelle’s kitchen in Wolseley. She knew she had something when people kept asking her to make them some of her home-brewed kombucha. The business grew from family and friends to farmers markets and small local restaurants to grocery stores all within a few years while still working in healthcare. Michelle just quit her healthcare job at Pan Am Clinic to take WK full time.
What has been your biggest success as a maker? Biggest struggle you’ve overcome?
My biggest success is looking back and seeing how far my small basic homebrew kombucha recipe has brought me. So many people love my products. It makes them happy and feel good. I am so grateful for the support of the community and the community is what inspires me to keep going! When WK found 749 Wall Street, my daughter was born. Literally at the same time. We searched for a location for 2 years before finding our home on Wall. My husband asked, are you sure you want to take on building your kombuchery with a newborn baby? There was no question, this was it. So, the biggest struggle was to get to where I am now. Many sleepless nights + a few months of construction and here we are a year and a half later thriving in Manitoba’s first kombuchery!
Any advice that you would tell someone hoping to start up their own business or product line?
Starting a business is hard. You wear many hats and need to be able to multitask every day. The work never ends as there is always something to work on in your business. But, the reward of creating something and having people love something you created is priceless and worth every bit of hard work. So, my advice is to be prepared to work hard.
