About Them

Can you please fully explain your business or product line?

Spreads by Cede creates nutritiously infused almond butters with no added oils or sugars. We strive to make combinations of nutritious, yet delicious kitchen staples by using unique ingredients that show the potential of food to be fun, creative, and adventurous. Some flavours include Cacao Maca, Lucuma Turmeric, Acai Blueberry, Matcha Lavender, and a crowd favourite fall seasonal flavour, Pumpkin Spice Goji.

With the local maker community continuing to grow, what makes you stand out from the rest?

Our nutritiously infused almond butter stand out here in Winnipeg, MB because we provide a unique twist on traditional, plain nut butters. We have brought new flavours to the local Winnipeg food market and plan to expand our product line over the next few years. I (Marcede) also carry a Bachelors Degree in Human Nutritional Sciences and my experience in nutrition and food preparation has been an asset to the success of Spreads by Cede.

What made you realize that you had a product that could be shared with others?

I began making the original nutritiously infused almond butters for myself and family members when I realized my dream of creating a food product and owning a business was right in front of me. I wanted to create something very unique to the Winnipeg food market, and realized at the time there were no other local nut butter companies. I realized I had all the skills, creativity, and resources I needed to make my dream of becoming a local business owner come true, so I took the “leap” and the response and support was incredible. I can’t thank everyone enough who has purchased a jar, followed us on social media, “liked” a post, visited our website, or just said hi at our booth at a market. This love and support is truly what keeps me going on a daily basis.

What has been your biggest success as a maker? Biggest struggle you’ve overcome?

My biggest success as a maker has been reaching the shelves of some of my all time favourite local retail stores. It’s truly a one-of-a-kind feeling to walk into a grocery store and see a product that YOU have created sitting on the shelf. Another thing that I consider a huge success is becoming part of the Third + Bird maker family. For years before I started Spreads by Cede, I always dreamed of attending such an incredible event as a maker, and I still remember the day I got my acceptance email for their 2018 Christmas Market.

My biggest struggle, however, has definitely been finding some sort of “work-life balance”. The first few years of owning Spreads by Cede I was working other part-time jobs as I tried to support myself through the last year of my university degree and that post-graduation life. Working endless amounts of hours on my business, as well as trying to financially support myself with other part-time gigs, I found my schedule filled up VERY fast. After a few years in business, I finally feel like I kind of have it figured out and have realized what my true values are and the importance of prioritizing.

Any advice that you would tell someone hoping to start up their own business or product line?

My main advice for anyone hoping to start up their own business or product line is prepare yourself for a LOT of work, however, don’t overdo it. Small business burn out is a real thing, and taking time for yourself, finding “work-life balance”, and setting boundaries are super important as a business owner. Don’t let social media influence you into thinking you always NEED to be working in order to be successful. Another piece of advice I would give is don’t give up. Once you hit a bump in the road (and that will happen over and over again), it’s so easy to throw in the towel. But one of my spin instructors said one simple thing during a class one time that has stuck with me ever since… He said, “Go forward and see what happens”. You truly never know what will happen, how far you’ll get, or what you’ll learn unless you just move forward.

Please share any upcoming events (physical events, virtual sales, etc.) that you think Winnipeggers would be interested in!

We have a Christmas seasonal flavour being launched in November that is another crowd favourite alongside our fall seasonal favourite. Stay tuned for an announcement via our social media!
