About Magpie Chiq

Can you please fully explain your business or product line?

I create leather goods. Each item is customized with a personal image at the customer’s request. The quality, high-end material and customization of each item creates beautiful and wearable art.

With the local maker community continuing to grow, what makes you stand out from the rest?

As a Metis designer, instead of beading my images on my product, I chose to either paint or wood burn onto the leather.

What made you realize that you had a product that could be shared with others?

The response I received from the level of detail that I put into my work created more and more orders.

What has been your biggest success as a maker? Biggest struggle you’ve overcome?

My biggest success would have to be creating a quality product that people tell their friends about, which creates repeat customers. My biggest struggles would have to be having enough downtime! I love sewing so much that I forget to take breaks and time for myself.

Any advice that you would tell someone hoping to start up their own business or product line?

Always believe in yourself, only you know what you are capable of and passion is such a great catalyst to launch into success. Never be afraid to ask for help, to work with your strengths, and hire people to work with theirs.

Please share any upcoming events (physical events, virtual sales, etc.) that you think Winnipeggers would be interested in!

I will be at the Winnipeg Art Gallery’s Crafted Show + Sale from November 6th to 8th. Manitoba Craft Council also has a regular call for submission on varying forms of art/craft.
